Monongalia County Communities In Schools serves three schools—University High School, Westwood Middle School, and Skyview Elementary School. While they may be a small team, they are truly a mighty one! The Monongalia County CIS team consistently demonstrates what strong collaboration and student-centered support can look like across their schools.
One powerful example of this work took place at University High School. With the support of Communities In Schools, MedEd students, and the school’s Powder Puff Football teams, a schoolwide food drive was organized to benefit University High’s food pantry and clothing closet. The initiative was structured as a grade-level advisory challenge, with the winning advisory earning Chick-fil-A chicken minis as their prize.
Throughout the week, students were encouraged to bring in specific items to help ensure the pantry was fully stocked with essential goods—and the response was remarkable. During the Powder Puff Football Game alone, teams collected 316 canned goods. Advisory classes contributed an additional 2,818 food items, bringing the grand total to an outstanding 3,134 items donated.
