If you’re looking for schools where students are truly seen, supported, and encouraged to thrive, Hancock County is a place that stands out. The Communities In Schools Site Coordinators here go far beyond their roles, showing up each day with compassion and dedication to ensure every student and family feels welcomed and cared for, no matter the challenge, and in every season of the school year. Whether it’s helping coordinate medical appointments, supporting English language learners and their families, or making sure students have new clothes to start the year with confidence, their work is rooted in genuine care. They give their time, energy, and heart to make school a place where every child feels safe, valued, and excited to belong.
At Weirton Elementary, that spirit of care is felt in a special way through the School-Based Health Center, a division of CHANGE, Inc. This center offers a wide range of services, from primary care and immunizations to behavioral health, lab work, dental care, and more, right within the school. It’s more than just convenient; it’s a comforting, familiar space where students can receive the care they need without missing valuable time in the classroom or requiring parents to step away from work.
A big part of what makes this experience so meaningful is the personal touch. Communities In Schools Site Coordinator Kristen Bowman-Cross is often there to walk students to their appointments, offering reassurance and a steady presence. And for students who may feel a little nervous, there’s Clara, the beloved therapy dog, always ready to bring a sense of calm, comfort, and a gentle reminder that they’re not alone.
