The Communities In Schools (CIS) Site Coordinators in Pendleton County make a meaningful difference in the lives of students every single day. They go above and beyond to ensure that every child feels supported, valued, and cared for. Whether it meets basic needs, such as providing weekend food bags, school supplies, and clothing, or assisting with social, emotional, or academic challenges, CIS coordinators are a consistent and compassionate presence. Most importantly, they serve as trusted adults who listen, encourage, and advocate for students when they need it most.

One of the most powerful examples of their commitment is the significant reduction in chronic absenteeism across Pendleton County. Over the past three years, the chronic absence rate has dropped from 21% to 11.3%, a remarkable achievement made possible through the dedication and persistence of CIS site coordinators in each school. By closely monitoring attendance data, identifying root causes of absences, removing barriers, and providing individualized support, they help students stay engaged and present. Creative incentives and friendly competitions also encourage students to make attendance a priority.  A few examples include attendance themed spirit weeks, an assembly at all four schools by the WVU mascot with a message regarding the importance of coming to school, monthly prizes for students randomly chosen with high percentage rates, and celebrations held for classes who achieve high attendance. Examples of celebrations include hot chocolate and cookies while wearing pajamas in December, earning the attendance flag, trophy, etc.

At Pendleton County Middle/High School, a beloved therapy dog named Penny greets students each morning and offers comfort and emotional support throughout the day. Penny also visits the county’s elementary schools on occasion and often joins attendance celebrations for their classes with outstanding attendance, adding joy and encouragement to their accomplishments.

CIS coordinators are changing lives in Pendleton County. Their dedication strengthens not only individual students, but also the entire school community—one relationship, one success story, and one school day at a time.
