Communities In Schools (CIS) is proud to be present in every school in Barbour County, ensuring students across the county have access to the supports they need to succeed. A shining example of this work is led by longtime Site Coordinator Paula Daniels, whose dedication has transformed the way basic needs are met for students and families.

One of the most impactful initiatives in the county is “The Store.” With the gracious support of the Barbour Community Health Association and it is now operated by CIS, The Store, provides students with access to essential items such as clothing, shoes, hats, and hygiene products. But it is much more than a supply closet—it is designed to give students a true shopping experience.

Students browse items and check out at the desk just like they would in a retail store. Items are bagged for them, and CIS collects data during checkout to track support provided. The Store is supported by three dedicated community volunteers, helping ensure it runs smoothly and remains welcoming for students.

To make visits even more engaging, students can sign up for the Monthly Frequent Shopper Prize, which also helps track when CIS case-managed students access services. Each month, one student is selected to receive a gift card to the local dollar general Dollar General.

The Store also brings creativity and excitement throughout the year. Seasonal displays highlight items like sweaters and flannels during colder months, making the space feel like a real storefront. During the holidays, The Store transforms into a Christmas Shop, where students can pick out gifts for friends, family, and loved ones. To make the experience even more special, a gift-wrapping station is set up in the school library, allowing students to wrap their presents before taking them home.

Through thoughtful programs like The Store, Barbour County CIS continues to remove barriers for students while creating experiences that build dignity, joy, and community.
